IS YOUR EV CHARGER SHOWING THESE SIGNS?
Seven Signs Your EV Charger Needs Repair — Not Another Reset
A reset can get a charger through one more night, but if the same symptom keeps coming back, something in the charger, the outlet or the circuit is failing. These are the seven problems we see most often in Toronto and GTA garages.
- 01
Charger Won’t Turn On
No lights, no app connection, nothing when you plug in. Usually power isn’t reaching the unit: a tripped or failed breaker, a loose termination at the panel or in the charger, or a failed internal power supply. We test the circuit before we blame the charger.
- 02
Car Is Plugged In but Not Charging
The charger has power and the car sees it, but the session never starts. This points to a failed handshake between the charger and the car, a ground-fault self-test that won’t pass, or a worn contactor inside the unit.
- 03
Charger Trips the Breaker
An EV charger draws full current for hours. A breaker that’s worn, wrongly rated for continuous load or overheating at its terminal will trip mid-session. Resetting it every night pushes that load through a failing part.
- 04
Plug or Handle Gets Hot
Warm after a long session is normal. Too hot to hold is a fault. Heat at the handle, the cable or a NEMA 14-50 outlet means a worn pin or a loose connection. Stop charging and leave it unplugged until it’s checked.
- 05
Error Light Is Flashing
Red lights, blink codes and app fault messages mean the charger has detected a problem and stopped itself: a ground fault, a missing ground, overheating or a wiring fault. The code tells us where to start testing.
- 06
Charging Slower Than Usual
If a full charge now takes much longer, the charger may be cutting power to protect itself from heat, running at the wrong amperage after a reset, or seeing low voltage on the circuit. A load management device can also throttle it more than it should.
- 07
Charging Stops or Won’t Stay Connected
Sessions that start and stop, end overnight or lose the Wi-Fi link usually come from an intermittent connection, a ground fault that trips partway through, or overheating. Scheduled charging that never starts is often a network or settings issue.
- 08
Charger Makes Clicking or Buzzing Noise
A steady hum during charging is normal. Clicking, chattering or a loud buzz is not — it usually means a relay or contactor inside the unit is failing to hold contact cleanly. Left alone, that part typically fails completely. Worth checking before it strands you mid-charge.

FULL-SCOPE EV CHARGER REPAIR
EV Charger Repair Toronto: Circuit Diagnosis, Connector Checks & Unit Replacement
Circuit & Breaker Diagnosis
We measure voltage at the panel and at the charger, under load and at rest, check the breaker for heat damage and correct rating, and confirm the wire size matches the charger’s output. You get a written diagnosis before any part is replaced.
Plug, Connector & Cable Inspection
We check the charging handle, pins and cable for heat marks, cracked insulation and wear, and inspect NEMA 14-50 receptacles for loose or discoloured contacts. A plug-in charger on a worn outlet is a frequent cause of overheating at the plug.
Ground Fault & GFCI Testing
Every Level 2 charger has its own ground-fault protection, and some circuits also have a GFCI breaker or receptacle. We test both, verify the ground path back to the panel, and fix nuisance trips caused by protection that doesn’t suit the setup.
Terminal & Connection Tightening
EV charging puts full current through every connection for hours at a time. We torque the terminals at the breaker, at any junction and inside the charger to the manufacturer’s spec, because loose terminations are what turn into heat, tripping and burnt contacts.
Breaker Replacement
A worn or wrongly rated breaker is replaced with a matching ESA-approved unit sized for continuous load — a charger set to 48 A needs a 60 A breaker. We match the panel brand exactly and set the charger’s amperage to suit the circuit.
Charger Replacement When Repair Isn’t Possible
Some faults are inside the sealed unit — a failed control board, contactor or integrated cable — and the manufacturer doesn’t sell parts. When replacement is the right call, we say so in the written quote, document the fault if the unit is still under warranty, and install the new charger on the existing circuit when it’s rated for it.

Wall Connector Not Working? Here’s What Happens
Whether your Tesla charger repair involves a flashing error light or your home EV charger repair is for a charging station that simply stopped working overnight, every visit starts the same way. Your EV charger electrician diagnoses the fault before touching anything — checking the circuit, the breaker and the unit itself to find why the charger stopped working. Most EV charger troubleshooting is completed in under an hour, with a written quote before any repair or EV charger replacement begins.
Same-Day Diagnosis

REPAIR VS. NEW CHARGER
EV Charger Repair or a New Charger — Which One Do You Need?
If your charger used to work and now doesn’t, you most likely need a repair. If you need a charger where there isn’t one yet, or more power than your current circuit can give, that’s a new installation.
You Need EV Charger Repair If
Your charger worked before and has stopped, it trips the breaker, the plug or handle runs hot, an error light is flashing, it charges slower than it used to, or sessions keep cutting out.
You Need a New Charger If
You don’t have a Level 2 charger yet, want it moved to a new spot, bought an EV that needs more power than your circuit supplies, are adding a second charger, or the old unit can’t be repaired and the circuit needs changes too.
EV Charger Repair Reviews in Toronto & GTA
EV Charger Repair Toronto — Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my EV charger not working?
Start with the breaker. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off — there is a fault that needs testing. If the breaker is on and the charger still shows no lights, or the car won’t start charging, check the charger’s status light or app for a fault code. Past that point, EV charger troubleshooting means testing voltage and connections inside the panel and the unit, which is work for a licensed electrician.
Why does my EV charger keep tripping the breaker?
Usually one of three things: the breaker is worn or not rated for continuous load, a connection is loose and heating up, or the charger is detecting a ground fault. A GFCI breaker on a circuit where the charger already has its own ground-fault protection can also cause nuisance trips. We test the circuit first and the charger second, so you only replace what has actually failed.
How much does EV charger repair cost in Toronto?
It depends on what the diagnostic finds. Tightening terminations, replacing a breaker or a NEMA 14-50 outlet, and replacing the charger itself are very different jobs. We give you a written fixed quote after the diagnostic, so you know the price before any work starts.
My Tesla Wall Connector is not working. Can you fix it?
Yes. Many Wall Connector problems come from the circuit, the breaker or the commissioning settings rather than the unit, and we fix those on the spot. If the fault is inside the Wall Connector and it’s still under Tesla’s warranty, we document the diagnosis so you can get the unit replaced through Tesla.
Should I repair or replace my EV charger — or do I need a new installation?
Repair it if the fault is in the circuit, the outlet, the connections or a replaceable part. Replace the unit when the fault is inside a sealed charger with no parts available. If you need a charger in a new location, a second charger or more power than your circuit can supply, see our EV charger installation service.
Is the problem my EV charger or my electrical panel?
If only the charger’s breaker trips, the cause is usually the charger circuit or the unit. If other breakers trip too, the panel buzzes or feels warm, or lights flicker while you charge, the panel needs a look as well — see our electrical panel repair service. We check both on the same visit.
