BEFORE YOU CALL ANYONE

Toronto Power Outage Now — Is It the Grid or Your Home?

Not every power outage in Toronto needs an electrician. Look out the window or check the hallway lights in your building first. It takes 30 seconds and tells you who to call.

Whole street is out? It’s a Toronto Hydro outage

That’s a grid outage. Toronto Hydro restores it for free, so you don’t need an electrician. Check the Toronto Hydro outage map or call 416-542-8000. Outside the city: Hydro One, 1-800-434-1235.

Lost power in your house only? The problem is inside

Your neighbours have power and you don’t? The fault is on your side: the main breaker, the meter base or the panel. Toronto Hydro won’t fix it. Try the 2-minute check, then call us.

Half the house has no power? Don’t wait until morning

A partial power outage usually means one incoming line is lost or the neutral has come loose. If lights dim and brighten or appliances act strangely, unplug your electronics and call an emergency electrician now.

Power out in one room? Start with a quick reset

Usually a tripped GFCI or breaker, sometimes a loose outlet connection. Reset each one once using the check below. Breaker not resetting or still no power? Didn’t help? Call us!

2-MINUTE SELF-CHECK

No Power in House? Check These Three Things First

Lost power in your house but the street is lit? Many Toronto homes get power back after one of these quick checks. If a step doesn’t help, stop there and call a power outage electrician.

  • 01

    Main Breaker

Find the large 100A or 200A breaker at the top of your panel. Push it fully OFF, then firmly ON, just once. Main breaker not resetting? Don’t force it.

  • 02

    GFCI Outlets

No power to outlets in the kitchen, bathroom, basement or garage? Find the outlet with TEST and RESET buttons and press RESET firmly.

  • 03

    Circuit Breakers

Power out in one room? Look for a breaker sitting out of line with the rest. Switch it OFF, then ON. If it trips again, unplug everything on that circuit.

  • 04

    Stop & Call

Burning smell, a hot panel cover, buzzing or water near the panel? Don’t touch anything. Step away and call our 24/7 emergency electrician. Smoke or fire: 911 first.

Power Outage Repair in Toronto — What We Do On Site

When you’ve lost power in your house, guessing wastes time. Our ESA-licensed electricians test first and replace only what has failed, from the service entrance to the last outlet.

  1. 01

    Service & Panel Diagnostics

We test voltage at the meter base, main lugs and both incoming lines to find exactly where the power stops. If the fault is on Toronto Hydro’s side, we tell you.

  2. 02

    Lost Neutral Tracing

Lights that dim and brighten, or a partial power outage, often point to an open neutral. We find it and fix it before it damages your appliances.

  3. 03

    Main Breaker Testing & Replacement

Main breaker not resetting or tripping under normal load? We test it to confirm whether the breaker or the circuit is at fault, then replace failed breakers with exact ESA-approved matches.

  4. 04

    Connection Tightening

Loose lugs and terminations cause flickering and half-house outages. We torque every connection in the panel to spec.

  5. 05

    Circuit Restoration

No power to outlets, or one room still dark? We trace the dead circuit to the damaged wire, junction or outlet and restore it.

Power Outage in Toronto — Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a power outage in Toronto right now?

Check the Toronto Hydro outage map, which updates about every 10 minutes, or call 416-542-8000. If your street is on the map, Toronto Hydro will restore power for free. If your address isn’t there and your neighbours have power, the problem is inside your home.

My electric is out but the neighbours have power. Can an electrician come tonight?

Yes. We work 24/7 across Toronto, including weekends and holidays. Call and describe what you see, and we’ll tell you whether it’s a grid issue or send an ESA-licensed electrician.

Why does half my house have no power?

Most Toronto homes are fed by two incoming lines. When one is lost at the main breaker, a loose lug or the service connection, half your circuits go dead. If lights dim and brighten instead, suspect a loose neutral. Either way, call right away.

Why is my breaker not resetting?

Either there’s a short or ground fault on the circuit, or the breaker has failed internally. Don’t keep forcing it. We test the circuit first and the breaker second, then fix whichever is at fault.

How much does power outage repair cost in Toronto?

It depends on what the diagnostic finds. Tightening a connection, replacing a breaker and repairing a service mast are very different jobs. You get a written price before any work starts.

Is a partial power outage safe to leave until morning?

No. A partial power outage or flickering lights can mean a loose neutral, which can damage electronics and overheat wiring. Unplug sensitive equipment and call an emergency electrician now.

We lost power in our house late on a Saturday evening, but the neighbours still had electricity. Sparky’s sent an electrician who checked our panel and found the problem. He explained what needed to be fixed and gave us the price before starting. Really appreciated the help on a weekend.

Half our house suddenly went dark while the other half had power. The kitchen lights worked, but several bedrooms and outlets were completely dead. The electrician traced the issue to a faulty connection and repaired it safely. Everything was explained clearly, and there were no surprises.

The power went out in our upstairs bedroom, but the rest of the house was normal. We weren’t sure whether it was a breaker or something in the wiring. Sparky’s electrician checked the circuit, located the bad connection and fixed the problem. He also made sure the other outlets in the room were working before leaving.

Our main breaker wouldn’t reset, and we had no electricity in the house. It happened around 2 a.m., so finding someone available was a huge relief. Sparky’s answered our call and arranged an emergency electrician. He diagnosed the issue, explained the repair and provided a written estimate first. Very grateful for the nighttime service.

We thought it was a neighbourhood power outage, but Toronto Hydro confirmed the issue was on our side. Sparky’s electrician inspected the electrical panel and traced the fault to our home’s electrical system. He walked us through what had happened and what needed repairing. Glad we called instead of continuing to reset the breakers ourselves.

Several outlets in our living room stopped working, even though the lights were fine. I tried resetting the breaker, but nothing changed. The technician arrived with his testing equipment, found the electrical fault and got the outlets working again. Professional service and very tidy work.
